Fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar on Tuesday made it apparent that he would take legal route to get the five-year ban forced on him by the Pakistan Cricket Board upturned.

“I have always given my best efforts for my country and the national team. It is a harsh and unfair verdict as far as I am concerned,” he said shortly after the Board declared the ban on him for repeated violations of the players code of conduct and acts of indiscipline.

“I am surprised at this decision. I was expecting them to be compassionate because I went and apologised,” he said.

Shoaib said he would appoint the best lawyers and fight his case in court as he had the right to appeal against the ban.

PCB Chairman Nasim Ashraf told a news conference the authorities had “lost faith in Shoaib” and had “enough” of his usual indiscipline.

He said the pacer had become a destructive influence and the Board was sad and had no option but to accept the ban suggested by the disciplinary committee.

Shoaib accused some people within the Board and Pakistan cricket of trying to destroy his career with these controversies.

“I will not rest until I get this ban clear. I have always been dedicated to the team. This is how they repay me with such a callous decision,” Shoaib said.

The 32-year-old fast bowler had also absconded from a doping ban in December 2006 after he petitioned against the two-year ban forced by a drugs inquiry tribunal after he tested positive for a banned stuff.

Former Test captain Intikhab Alam said the ban was right as there could be no negotiation on discipline.

Another former Test player, Iqbal Qasim, however, thought the decision was a bit harsh.

“I just feel poignant for a fellow cricketer as it could finish his cricket career.”

Member of Parliament Hanif Abbasi alleged he would take up the ban issue in the newly designated parliament and they would not allow the ban to stay for long.
