ICC said: Champions Trophy postpones till next year

Maximum teams raising concerns over security in Pakistan and unwilling to play in the Champion Trophy, the ICC postponed the event until October 2009.

The ICC board met in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, before taking the decision. It was further agreed that the board would meet in September 2008 to discuss the details of the postponement.

Pakistan will retain the right to host the tournament but they said that other members agreed to continue to express reservations over issues of safety and security then the ICC board would have the right to decide about the tournament’s location.

South Africa also pull out from Champions Trophy

After Australia, now South Africa have said they would not send their team to take part in the Champions Trophy if it was staged in Pakistan. They have requested the ICC to reschedule the tournament.

CSA said that the decision came following the board’s meeting with the ICC task team.

Chief executive Haroon Lorgat to discuss the security scenario in Pakistan following a spate of recent bombings in the country. The presentation of the task force though failed to convince CSA.

Norman Arendse the CSA president said that they will not send their team to Pakistan.

NASCAR: Punished Gibbs team for breaking rules

Gibbs team punished by NASCAR for breaking rules. Inspectors found Tony Stewart and Joey Logano had been tampered with to mask their horsepower.

NASCAR said that the cars were found to have a “magnet spacer attached under the gas pedal with the intent of compromising the chassis dynamometer test,” after Saturday’s race at Michigan International Speedway.

They took 150 points each away from Stewart and Logano, who finished third and seventh respectively in the race, and indefinitely suspended their crew chiefs, who were also fined USD 50,000. Five other crew members were suspended indefinitely.

Australia won’t participate in Champions Trophy

Australia’s cricketers said that the team will not participate in next month’s Champions Trophy cricket tournament in Pakistan due to security concerns.

Australian Cricketers’ Association chief Paul Marsh said, “Our position is that we can’t recommend the players tour Pakistan,”

Cricket Australia spokesman Peter Young reiterated concerns about touring but said the governing body was awaiting an official ICC report from meetings with other concerned nations _ England, South Africa and New Zealand _ before making a public announcement.

It looks like eight is enough for golden boy Michael Phelps. The Olympian scored yet another gold medal. It is the most golds won by any athlete at a single Olympics.

The US men’s 4×100-meter medley relay team, again on the strength of an anchor leg swim by Jason Lezak, broke a world record with a time of 3:29.34.

After the victory, Phelps led the team (which included Aaron Peirsol, Brendan Hansen and Lezak) in a long poolside embrace.

He said, “These guys made it possible,”

Virender Sehwag India Opener may not play in Monday’s five-match series against Sri Lanka due an ankle injury.

Virat Kohli will replace Virender Sehwag in the team for the 1st ODI in Dambulla. Virender Sehwag had injured his ankle during practice. He was seen limping out of ground after the practice session.

A team management official said, “If the swelling in his ankle subsides, why not play him?,”

Dhoni said: Losing Tendulkar can be crucial

The captain of Indian team Mahendra Singh Dhoni said that losing Sachin Tendulkar ahead of the one-dayers against Sri Lanka could be crucial for the team.

Dhoni said, “Losing Sachin Tendulkar at this point of time can be crucial. It is very difficult to fill the space when it comes to Sachin. He not only contributes with the bat and the ball his impact in the dressing room is great,”

He said, “Players look up to him and he always come up with brilliant suggestion and advices on the field as well. Talent wise and advice point of view it is very difficult to fill in his space,”

Tendulkar, who jarred his left elbow while fielding in the third and final Test, has been ruled out of the ODI series after he was prescribed three-week rest.

Michael Phelps won his 5th Olympic gold

Michael Phelps won his fifth Olympic gold medal in swimming the leadoff leg of the 800-meter freestyle relay and helping the United States smash the old world record by 4.68 seconds.

Phelps, Ryan Lochte, Ricky Berens and Peter Vanderkaay led the entire race, winning in 6 minutes, 58.56 seconds. That bettered the old mark of 7:03.24 set by the U.S. at last year’s world championships in Australia.
