According to Developer Real Estate giant Emaar Properties said that Burj Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is now the world’s tallest man-made structure, after reaching a record height of 688 meters.

Emaar said, the tower is now over 160 storeys - the largest number of floors in any building across the world.

The tower unofficially became the world’s tallest man-made structure in April this year after surpassing the KVLY-TV mast (628.8 metres) in North Dakota in the US.

Designed by Chicago-based Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), Burj Dubai is being constructed by high-rise building experts from South Korea’s Samsung Corporation.

Internet to the rescue for work-bound viewers

Majority of Chinese are shifting to the Internet to watch the Olympics at work as bosses prevent them from watching the Games on television. Half of the respondents in an online survey by marketing firm Carat China accepted that they watch the Olympics at work via the Internet. Internet live streaming or replays of games increase on weekdays, when work intervened with televised Olympics events.

Television was still the medium of acceptance for online respondents. 90 percent of saw games on TV versus 80 percent who also viewed online. “Consumers have shifted their interest for information regarding Olympic in huge numbers,” said Seth Grossman, communication planning director for Carat in Shanghai.

First digital map of the earth geology

Scientists made the first digital map of the earth’s geology and said it could guide oil and gas exploration and mining or pinpoint sites for burying greenhouse gases.

They said that the map shows the world stripped of vegetation, water, soil and human structures by joining up existing data from the geological centers of 83 member nations in a planetary jigsaw on the Internet

Ian Jackson Chief of operation said, “We have simply unlocked what already exists,”

He said, “The rocks beneath your feet have a powerful impact on resources, minerals, where your energy comes from, the hazards that you face and, last but not least, climate change,”

Toughest event in Beijing: Stopping the rain

China boasts that its scientists can make enough rain to fill the Yellow River but as the Olympics draw near the question is whether they can also prevent a deluge.

China forecasters said, a 41 per cent chance of rain on the day of the August 8 opening ceremony.

China was considering deploying experimental technology to try to ensure dry weather and clean air for Friday.

Three tech giants– Hewlett-Packard, Intel and Yahoo – said that they are teaming up on a research project to help turn Web services into reliable, everyday utilities.

These companies are joining forces with academic researchers in Asia, Europe and the United States to create an experimental network that lets researchers test “cloud-computing” projects — Web-wide services that can reach billions of users at once.

They said that their main goal is to promote open collaboration among industry, academic and government researchers by removing financial and logistical barriers to working on hugely computer-intensive, Internet-wide projects.

Prabhakar Raghavan the head of Yahoo Research said, “No one institution or company is going to figure this out,”

China becomes biggest net nation

As per latest official survey, China has the world’s largest net-using population.

In CNNIC (China Internet Network Information) report, more than 253 million people in the country are now online.

The figure is higher than the 223 million that the US mustered in June, according to Nielsen Online.

Net penetration in the US stands at 71% compared to 19% in China suggesting it will eventually vastly outstrip the US.

Microsoft has set the stage for a battle to throw Yahoo’s board of directors when it announced that it was likely to reopen talks to purchase the part of the internet company only when a new board was appointed first.

The intervention has given support to the flagging efforts of activist investor Carl Icahn to unseat Jerry Yang, Yahoo’s chief executive, and the rest of the board. It also breathes life into Microsoft’s six-month battle with Yahoo, which had subsided in the three weeks. After that, Microsoft had left disclosed a proposal of its own to take Yahoo’s search business; however, it had also said it was no more interested to purchase the whole company.

Google faces ‘Street View block’

Google is planning to launch a mapping tool as the Information Commissioner in the UK.

Simon Davis from the group of Privacy International, a UK rights group, said that this technology does not favor data protection laws, and in their view they need a person’s permit if they make use of a person’s face for commercial purposes.

Street View has already been launched in the US. It includes photos of streets in major American cities, photographing of areas in the UK including London. But some people in the US have complained against it that their images being used and Google has removed their presence on request. Continue reading…

Yahoo planning reorganization

Sources said, Yahoo Inc is considering a reorganization to centralize its mail, search and homepage divisions into a global product organization,

President Sue Decker said that its time to improve coordination between product and global sales groups.

The move comes as Yahoo, which has ended talks for a tie-up with Microsoft Corp in favor of a search deal with Google Inc, tries to convince investors it will substantially improve its business.

New war robot for US military

Robot manufacturer iRobot Corporation and research and development company Metal Storm have together invented a war robot for the U.S. military.

Experts behind the Terminator-like war robot have yet to name it.

Sources said, “The robot is being marketed for “border patrol” and “crowd control” scenarios.” They say that they are trying to enable the machine to work in several other military situations.
