Letter: More backlash if blonde, blue-eyed kids were held

More backlash if blonde,
blue-eyed kids were held

The detainees at the southern border left their homelands to escape crippling poverty and violence in hopes of finding refuge in America.

While they may have left the threats in their native countries behind, they find themselves imprisoned under inhumane conditions. A case of out of the fire, into the frying pan (good to get out of the fire but the frying pan isn’t a good place to be either).

Some believe that the reason there isn’t more outrage about the human rights crisis at the border is because of the migrants’ skin color.

If the people in custody at the border were white, there would be far more backlash. That rings true. Would the ongoing crisis have lasted as long as it has if there were instead blonde, blue-eyed children suffering through abuse for weeks?
