Letter: Should we feel sad for multi-billion dollar shoe companies?

A solution for tariffs on
largely ‘luxury’ items

Re: “Nike, Converse, Adidas: 170 shoe retailers warning Trump against trade war” (Page C8, May 22):

Is the average American supposed to feel sad for these multi-billion dollar shoe companies with this article?

Notice one well-known shoe brand missing from this story? That would be New Balance, which manufacturers many of its shoes in the United States (imagine that).

Is the average American supposed to feel sorry that these companies put all their manufacturing eggs into one basket (China) and did not plan for the future with something like tariffs being a possibility?

Many complaints about tariffs lately seem to be centered around “luxury” items. Here’s a solution: Stop buying “luxury” items that are overpriced and the tariffs will have little effect on you.
