Strong 6.8 quake rattles northern Japan

Sources said that a strong earthquake measuring 6.8 on the moment magnitude scale shook deep beneath northern Japan on Wednesday

The quake struck at 1526 GMT and its epicenter was located 480 kilometers northeast of Tokyo. The depth of the earthquake was 124 kilometers below ground.

No tsunami in the Pacific was expected to follow the quake, the West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center said.

The Japanese meteorological center measured the tremor, which struck after midnight in northern Aomori prefecture on the northern part of the main Japanese island of Honshu, as 6.8 on the Richter scale.
