A senior diplomat said that China, basking under global acclaim for hosting the best ever Olympics, remains a “developing country” and it will continue to seek the path of “peaceful development”
Qin Gang Foreign Minister said, “China remains a developing country and seeking development continues to be a long-term and arduous task for the nation,”
Qin congratulated the success of Beijing Olympics games to the leadership of the Chinese Government. He said the international community and the international Olympic family as well as the outstanding performance of the athletes from various countries.

China urges Dalai Lama: Stop “separatist” actions:

China today asked the ageing Dalai Lama to stop his “separatist” activities and take “concrete actions” for future talks on the vexed Tibet issue.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said, “We still hope that the Dalai Lama will stop his separatist activities and in his late years, make more contributions to the development of Tibet and his motherland,”
He said Chinas policy on the Tibet issue was consistent and clear-cut. “The door for talks and contact with the Dalai side is always open,” he said adding that it is “imperative for the Dalai side to take concrete actions to create favourable conditions for talks and contacts.”

Nepal reassures India over ties with China

Nepal said India should not worry about Prime Minister Prachanda’s recent visit to China as it will pursue a policy of “equi-distance” with its two neighbouring countries.
Upendra Yadav Foreign Minister said in Kathmandu, “India does not need to worry about Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal’s recent visit to China to observe the closing ceremony of Olympics as it was a normal visit where other world leaders were also invited,”
Yadav said that Nepal has close relations with both the countries and it ill pursue a policy of equi-distance with India and China.

Dalai Lama: Chinese have killed 140 Tibetans in this week

Dalai Lama said that Chinese security forces opened fire on a crowd this week in eastern Tibet and may have killed 140 people
He told, “The Chinese army again fired on a crowd on Monday August 18, in the Kham region in eastern Tibet,”
“One hundred and forty Tibetans are reported to have been killed, but the figure needs to be confirmed.”

WB utter India, China, US to find DOHA solution

World Bank Group President Robert B. Zoellick desires the United States, India, and China to work with WTO Director General Pascal Lamy to crop up with a negotiation on the Doha round of world trade discussions.
He said that Brazil is a developing country which is both a highly agricultural exporter and house to several poor farmers, can support. Indonesia and Australia may be in a condition to add to a solution even.

Chinese Scientists re-establish contact with first lunar probe

Though China’s ground control centre for the short period missed contact with the country’s first lunar probe satellite during a partial eclipse for more than three hours. The spacecraft is now working usually after scientists changed its orbit and switched off some facilities.
Based on the signals sent by the satellite after yesterdays eclipse, the ‘Change 1′ was functioning as predicted as said by Liu Junze of the Beijing Aerospace Control Centre (BACC).

UN said: India, China must boost spending to cut child deaths

The UN said that India, China and other countries in the Asia-Pacific region must boost public health spending by at least 2 per cent in order to reduce the number of children dying before their fifth birthday.
As per UN report, In 2006, 2.1 million children under five years died in India, one-fifth of the world’s total, and 4,15,000 died in China.
The major causes of child death are poor neonatal care, pneumonia, diarrhea and malnutrition.

Bush concerned about rights in China

George W Bush US President raised “deep concerns” about China’s detention of dissidents and respect for human rights on Thursday, as he prepared to head to Beijing for the Olympic Games.
Bush insisted that his criticism was not intended to “antagonise” China on the eve of the Games, and expressed optimism about the future of the world’s most populous nation.
Bush said, “The United States believes the people of China deserve the fundamental liberty that is the natural right of all human beings,”

Musharraf to visit China for Olympics

Pervez Musharraf Pakistan President has decided to go ahead with his plan to visit China to participate in the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games.
Earlier, Musharraf had cancelled his scheduled visit in the wake of reports that Pakistan’s ruling coalition could be finalising a move to impeach him.
Mohammad Sadiq Foreign Office spokesman said that Musharraf, who was due to fly to Beijing on Wednesday, had called off his visit, a day after sparring coalition allies Pakistan People’s Party and Nawaz Sharif’s PML(N) had crucial talks to discuss his fate.

Toughest event in Beijing: Stopping the rain

China boasts that its scientists can make enough rain to fill the Yellow River but as the Olympics draw near the question is whether they can also prevent a deluge.
China forecasters said, a 41 per cent chance of rain on the day of the August 8 opening ceremony.
China was considering deploying experimental technology to try to ensure dry weather and clean air for Friday.
