UN head visits China quake zone

ban_ki-moon-l.jpgThe United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has arrived to the Chinese province that was devastated by the earthquake and killed more than 55,000 people. He traveled to the town of Yingxiu from Chengdu, Sichuan province capital for witnessing the actual status of the province and relief efforts.

The 12th May disaster has left more than 5.47 million people homeless. It is expected that Mr. Ban will share a talk with Chinese Premier Wen Jiabo. The state news agency, Xinhua reported that UN Nations Secretary General will express his concern for the victims in the earthquake. Continue reading…

China mourns earthquake victims

china19.jpgFlags flew at half-staff, public entertainment was canceled and 1.3 billion people were asked to observe three minutes of silence as China began three days of mourning Monday for the victims of the nation’s massive earthquake.

The mourning comes as hopes of finding more survivors in the rubble fade.The number of confirmed deaths now stands at 32,477, but officials say the final toll may reach 50,000. More than 220,000 people have been injured.
The focus of the relief effort is now shifting towards providing food, medical care and shelter for the millions of people affected by Monday’s 7.9 magnitude earthquake. Continue reading…

Earthquake measuring 7.5 strikes China

061003_earthquake.jpgAn earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5 struck China’s Sichuan province on Monday, less than 100 km (60 miles) from the provincial capital of Chengdu.

The quake struck Wenchuan County, 100 kms to the north-west of Chengdu, provincial capital of Sichuan, on Monday afternoon, the bureau said.

The quake was felt in Beijing also, with reports of buildings swaying and people running out of their apartments into the streets. Continue reading…
