Sachin Tendulkar and Harbhajan Singh are set to return and beef up a struggling Indian team, both were picked here on Tuesday, for the three-Test series against Sri Lanka starting later this month.
The clamour for the expected retention of seniors Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman in the Test squad led by Anil Kumble has gone up after the one-day team’s failure to clinch both the tri-series in Bangladesh and the Asia Cup in Pakistan that ended on Sunday.
Tendulkar missed the two ODI events post-IPL to give rest to his troublesome groin. His inspiring presence along with those of the other three vastly experienced batsmen should give the batting line-up the stability that seemed to be missing at crucial stages in the one-day tournaments.

Sachin Tendulkar ignored reports saying he was uncertain for the opening Mumbai Indians IPL tie against Bangalore Royal Challengers.

He said there was couple of days left for him to get into shape to lead his team at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
“I am following the fitness regime specified to me by the physio. There are two more days for the match. No decision has been taken so far (whether he will play or not). It will be decided before the 20th,” stated the champion batsman at the squad launch.
Tendulkar has not played any competitive cricket since being ruled out of the last two Test matches against South Africa after aggravating an old groin injury. He could not join in the Olympic Torch relay event in New Delhi for the similar reason.
Team coach Lalchand Rajput declared that off-spinner Harbhajan Singh has been selected as vice-captain of the team.

Hounded Harbhajan Singh faces further allegations
Filed Under Sports | Posted By Jennifer Sullivan | Leave a Comment
Harbhajan Singh is being investigated for racist taunts in yesterday’s CB Series finals match in Sydney, reports claim.

India won the first of the best-of-three final by six wickets at the SCG, easily reaching their 240 victory target thanks to a fine 117 not out from Sachin Tendulkar.
But the match was marred by allegations from members of the crowd that spinner Harbhajan, 27, made monkey gestures to the crowd.
According to the Sydney Morning Herald Harbhajan scratched his armpits and spat at the crowd, actions some believe are related to taunts allegedly made earlier in the tour.
Harbhajan had been given a three-match ban for allegedly calling Australian all-rounder Andrew Symonds a “monkey” in the second Test in Sydney.
The International Cricket Council subsequently cleared him of racist abuse, downgrading the penalty to half his match fee for obscene language and offensive behaviour.
India had threatened to end the tour early over the row and the subsequent clashes have been marred by ongoing bitterness.
Last week Matthew Hayden even called Harbhajan an “obnoxious little weed”, a jibe which won him an official reprimand for breaching Cricket Australia’s code of conduct.
Team manager Bimal Soni insisted the fresh claims against Harbhajan were “wrong”.
“Nothing has been done like that. They are making a mountain out of a molehill. He did nothing,” he said.
Even some Australians have admitted the latest allegations are questionable.
Former Australian captain Allan Border, who was at the ground, suggested Harbhajan was coping well with the incessant taunts from the hostile crowd.
“I didn’t notice any gestures at all and I thought he handled himself quite well to be quite honest,” he commented.
The second finals match takes place in Brisbane on Tuesday.
