It occurred while Israeli President Shimon Peres hosted Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas at his official residence less than a kilometre away.

Officials said that the driver was a Palestinian from a village in an area of the occupied West Bank that Israel considers part of Jerusalem. Its residents have freedom of movement throughout the city and Israel.

Israel has shown willingness to move ahead with the peace talks in spite of deadly attack on a Jewish seminary of Jerusalem. As per the present condition, the US backed initiative for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas seems to be under threat due to the violence. The four years of virtual calm has come to a stand still.

Thousands of mourners walked in the funeral processions on Friday for the eight students killed by a 25 year old Palestinian from east Jerusalem, outside the bullet scarred seminary. The family of the accused Palestinian said that he was hysterical over this week’s massacre in the Gaza Strip.

A rabbi, which is a flagship of Israel’s West Bank settlement movement, at the seminary recited Hebrew psalms that the mass repeated. The dead bodies were taken away for funeral. One of the dead students was 26 years old; the rest were between 15 and 19, together with Avraham David Moses, 16, who was an American and moved to Israel in the 1990s. Israel suspicion over Lebanese guerrillas is confirmed by its warplanes sent to Beirut, as per a Lebanese security official. Israel’s army is silent over this issue.

Despite the atrocities, an Israeli official reported that they would not cut off peace talks with the Palestinian leadership. This can perhaps be seen as adherence to Washington’s persistence that extremist violence should not be permitted to overturn efforts to counterfeit a deal by the end of year. Israel will go ahead with the talks “so as not to punish moderate Palestinians for actions by people who are not just our enemies but theirs as well” said the official. Egypt, backed by the US is considering a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. Mark Regev, a spokesman for Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has not confirmed that Israel will continue to peace talks; however he didn’t deny the statements of the other officials that negotiations will continue.

Since Wednesday more than 100 Palestinians and three Israelis have been killed. Israelis are insisting to defending itself against rocket attack.

Palestinian President Mahmood Abbas has suspended all his formal attacks with Israel and protesting at its actions.

“The violence needs to stop and the talks need to resume.” says US President George W Bush and has joined international calls for a halt to the fighting in Gaza..

“No humane or legal justification for the attacks on Gaza”. says Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey.

And in Rome, Pope Benedict called for a halt to the “spiral of violence, unilaterally and without conditions”.

Israeli Aircrafts killed five militants on Monday and made at least eight different strikes.

The dead are said to be either members of the ruling Hamas movement or the Popular Resistance Committees group

Most of the attacks were made on metal workshops across the territory and the reports says that the Israeli navy was involved in the bombardment.

“Most of the attacks were targeted on weapons manufacturing facilities” says an Israeli army spokesman.

In Southern Israel, more than 25 rockets were fired by militants on Sunday. several reaching Ashkelon, a city of nearly 120,000 people, the Israeli military said.

Israel was blamed for the suspension of all talks by Mr Abbas’s spokesman, Nabil Abu Rudeina.

He also said that “In light of the Israeli aggression such communication has no meaning,”

After a conference in November in the US city of Annapolis Mr Abbas restarted his talks.

Condoleezza Rice is due to make a scheduled visit to the region early this week, meeting both Mr Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert.
