Tens of thousands bowed their heads at a ceremony in the Japanese city of Hiroshima on Wednesday, the 63rd anniversary of the world’s first atomic attack, as the city’s mayor hit out at countries that refuse to abandon their bombs.

A bell tolled at 8:15 am to mark the exact moment when the bomb dubbed “Little Boy” was dropped on the city, killing tens of thousands immediately and many more later from radiation sickness.

Tadatoshi Akiba mayor said, “We who seek the abolition of nuclear weapons are the majority,”

He said, “Last year 170 countries voted in favour of Japan’s UN resolution calling for the abolition of nuclear weapons. Only three countries, the United States among them, opposed this resolution,”

Dalai Lama to visit Japan in November

Dalai Lama, will visit Japan in November for a series of lectures and meetings on Buddhist themes.

the Fukuoka Prefectural Buddhist Association said, The Nobel laureate, whose travels overseas are opposed by China, will visit Japan from November 1 to 7 and speak in the southwestern city of Fukuoka about compassion and happiness.

Buddhist group said that supporters are also arranging other events for the Dalai Lama.

The 73-year-old Dalai Lama, who has lived in India since fleeing Tibet after a failed uprising in 1959, is a frequent visitor to Japan where he enjoys an active following.

Quake in Northern Japan Injures

After quake, rescue team searched for injured people. The earthquake in northern Japan that left more than 100 people injured, some of them seriously.

The 6.8 Richter-scale quake struck just after midnight on the mountainous northern tip of Japan’s main island of Honshu, shattering windows and triggering landslides that blocked key roads on the Pacific coast.

According to latest report, near about 110 people were injured. Police said that 15 of them were in serious condition, some having broken bones as the quake threw them to the ground.

Strong 6.8 quake rattles northern Japan

Sources said that a strong earthquake measuring 6.8 on the moment magnitude scale shook deep beneath northern Japan on Wednesday

The quake struck at 1526 GMT and its epicenter was located 480 kilometers northeast of Tokyo. The depth of the earthquake was 124 kilometers below ground.

No tsunami in the Pacific was expected to follow the quake, the West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center said.

The Japanese meteorological center measured the tremor, which struck after midnight in northern Aomori prefecture on the northern part of the main Japanese island of Honshu, as 6.8 on the Richter scale.

Oil, dollar to dominate G8 talks

In Japan, from the world’s richest nations, Finance ministers aimed at oil markets and a weak dollar as part of plans to handle global inflation and slowing economic growth at their talks.

As mounting energy costs agitated protests in Europe and Asia, the Group of Eight industrial countries talked up a link between a dollar slide and a doubling of oil prices in 12 months.

A G8 source told Reuters that the ministers` communiqué will explain commodity prices as a “serious challenge” to economic growth.

6.8 earthquake shakes Tokyo

a1.jpgA series of strong earthquakes including one with a magnitude of 6.8 hit the Tokyo area early Thursday, briefly cutting off power to more than 4,000 homes and causing light injuries, officials said.

NHK said,”There were no other immediate reports of injuries or damage from the magnitude 6.8 earthquake”.
