FAO report: Soaring food prices leave 925 million striving

The UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) has warned that rising food prices have pushed 75 million more people into the ranks of the world’s famished. FAO released new figures yesterday,
Next week General Assembly meeting on global anti-poverty targets known as the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), show that the number of people suffering from hunger is now roughly 925 million.
The FAO said, contributing to this growth is soaring food, fuel and fertiliser prices. According to FAO, Food prices rose 52% between 2007 and 2008 and fertilizer prices have nearly doubled over the past year. Continue reading…

Ban Ki-moon: UN troops should replace EU force in Chad, Central Africa

According to a report, Ban Ki-moon UN chief is urging the dispatch of 6,000 UN troops to replace a European Union force in restive eastern Chad and Central African Republic (CAR).
In Ban’s latest report, the UN Mission in CAR and Chad (MINURCAT) replacement troops would need an “over the horizon” capability to be able to deploy quickly “should the security situation rise to levels beyond the capacity of a United Nations force,” particularly during the transition period.
According to Ben, insecurity and instability in the two nations are spurred by many factors; positive steps have been taken towards bolstering peace and stability. Continue reading…

Ban Ki-Moon said: Next US Prez must lead on climate change

UN head said he hopes the next US President will show greater leadership than the current administration in tackling climate change.
General Ban Ki-Moon UN Secretary said that the US has been playing an important role on the world stage in discussing how to fight global warming.
According to him, US hasn’t done enough considering it is the world’s top economy and one of the world’s biggest emitters of greenhouse gases.

UN said: India, China must boost spending to cut child deaths

The UN said that India, China and other countries in the Asia-Pacific region must boost public health spending by at least 2 per cent in order to reduce the number of children dying before their fifth birthday.
As per UN report, In 2006, 2.1 million children under five years died in India, one-fifth of the world’s total, and 4,15,000 died in China.
The major causes of child death are poor neonatal care, pneumonia, diarrhea and malnutrition.

Russia, China veto UN sanctions on Zim

Russia and China have vetoed a west sponsored draft resolution in the UN Security Council that would have levied sanctions on Zimbabwe. The resolution has necessarily got nine votes for adoption with five members who are against it but Moscow and Beijing had vetoed it.
The resolution would have laid down arms imposition, funds abstain and travel ban on Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe and 13 other top officials of his government. Those who have detained were US, Britain, Italy, France, Burkina Faso, Belgium, Costa Rica, Panama and Croatia.

G8 deal on Global Warming inadequate: UN environment chief

The head of the UN environment programme said that the adjustment on global warming collided by the leaders of the group of eight industrialized nations is not up to the mark.
Asked by German NDR Radio if the agreement enclosed at the G-8 summit in Japan was a victory and would cease climate change. To this Achim Steiner has replied in negative. He said that they did not move a step back but I positively think that we will go a long way from what we require at present.
G8 leaders convinced to “consider and take” the aim of getting a cut of at least 50 per cent in worldwide carbon emissions by 2050. But they made no fruitful promises for action in the middle term.

World Environment Day calls for end to CO2 addiction

The United Nations impels the world to stop producing carbon dioxide and said that every person must fight with climate change. U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon said that the global warming has become a crucial issue and would harm everyone.

Billions more needed to rescue world from food crisis

UN chief Ban Ki-moon said, we need 20 million dollars a year would be needed to avoid disasters. He said, till now only 3 million dollars of emergency aid were made.
Ban said: we have to increase our resources; we need extra 15 to 20 billion dollars.
In Rome meeting, they announced new funding near about 2.7 billion dollars on the second day of the meeting. Ban also said, we have to increase 50 percent food production by 2030.
The UN World Food Programme announced 1.2 billion dollars for food crisis. The Islamic Development Band announced 1.5 billions dollars for poorest countries.
