India, US sign landmark 123 Agreement

Both the countries, India and the US on Friday operationalised the “path-breaking” bilateral nuclear deal as they signed the 123 Agreement here, with New Delhi insisting that the accord is “legally-binding” on both sides.
Pranab Mukherjee External Affairs Minister of India and US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice put the final seal on the agreement at an impressive ceremony held in the Benjamin Franklin Room of the State Department, culminating a crisis-ridden process initiated on July 18, 2005 in Washington during Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit for talks with US President George W. Bush.

Survey: US still world’s most competitive economy

According to a latest survey, The US still has the world’s most competitive economy, despite the recent turmoil that has seen some Wall Street giants tumble and others turn to the Federal Reserve for financial bailouts.
Result showed that near around over 12,000 business figures conducted by the Geneva-based World Economic Forum, the US ranked first, ahead of Switzerland, Denmark, Sweden and Singapore.
Researchers defended the survey’s accuracy despite the fact that it was conducted before the US government announced a USD 700 billion rescue package to save ailing financial companies from collapse.

US official said: China cancels military contacts with US

American official said that China has abruptly cancelled a series of military and diplomatic contacts with the US to protest a planned multi-billion dollar US arms sale to Taiwan.
A Defence Department spokesman Marine Maj Stewart Upton said that Beijing has notified the US that it will not go forward with several senior level visits and other cooperative military-to-military plans.
He said, “In response to Friday’s announcement of Taiwan arms sales, the People’s Republic of China cancelled or postponed several upcoming military-to-military exchanges,”

Bill Gates: No depression from US financial crisis

Bill Gates said that the US financial crisis does not spell the end of capitalism and will not lead to a depression.
He said, “It’s a very interesting crisis,”
The slump triggered by the collapse of the subprime housing market requires “some type of correction,” Gates added, “but fundamentally … companies’ willingness to invest, right now we haven’t seen a huge disruption in that.”
Gates added, “It looks like the economy may go down somewhat, but nothing like a big recession or a depression,”.

Iran: Indo-US nuke deal will trigger a new crisis

According to Iran, they warned that the Indo-US nuclear deal has “endangered” the Non-proliferation Treaty (NPT) and will trigger a “new crisis” for the international community.
Mohammad Saeedi Deputy head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organisation said, “The method used by several nuclear states to transfer the technology to non-members of the NPT, will create new crisis for the international community,”
He said, “Cooperation in the area of transfer of nuclear technology to the NPT non-members will endanger the treaty,”

Hollywood may benefit from the proposed US bailout

According to sources, Hollywood may benefit from the proposed $700 bn bailout of the U.S. financial system.
Sources said that the plan which was endorsed by the U.S. Senate would provide tax breaks worth more than $470 mn over the next decade for movie and TV producers that shoot in the US.
According to sources, one provision in the bill would provide film and TV producers with the same tax deductions that American manufacturers such as General Motors Corp and Boeing Co receive for making their products at home. Continue reading…

Rice said: US looking for enduring friendship with India

US Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice said that Indo-US ties were on a “very firm footing. She said that the historic nuclear deal was part of the broader framework for a more “enduring” friendship with India.
Rice said, “It is indeed an historic agreement. It is an agreement that cements an effort that we have been making for some time to bring together the world’s largest democracy with the world’s oldest continuous democracy,”

McCain defends Palin’s pak comment

Republican presidential nominee John McCain shielded running mate Sarah Palin, even as she gainsaid his policy against revealing in the public about attacking terrorist aims in Pakistan. McCain reproached Democrat Barack Obama during Friday’s presidential debate for saying openly he backs striking terrorist aims inside Pakistan if the Pakistani government is not able or reluctant to do so.
Osama bin Laden and other top Al-Qaida leaders are guessed to be disclosing in tribal areas along the Pakistan-Afghanistan borderline. Obama has said he would help sending American hordes into Pakistan to attack such aims. “You can not say that loudly,” McCain said during the debate. Official said: Asif Ali Zardaris ability to fight terror questioned

Official said that Asif Ali Zardari Pakistan’s new President is keen in trying to improve Indo-Pak relations and it came through clearly during his talks with India’s Prime Minister Manmohan Singh but it remains to be seen whether he will be able to implement anti-terror measures.
According to sources, the joint statement after Zardari-Singh talks was a great step where Zardari was willing to say something in public to take on terrorism.

US President Bush assures security aid to Pak

George W Bush acknowledged Pakistan’s sovereignty and offered help in improving security to fight terrorism during his first-ever meeting with new President Asif Ali Zardari amid tensions over US-led incursions targeting militants in Pakistani territory.
During their meeting, the two leaders discussed bilateral relations which have become strained following the cross-border raids by US-led troops from Afghanistan.
Bush also expressed condolences over Saturday’s massive suicide bombing on the Marriott Hotel in Islamabad in which at least 55 people were killed.
