The Dalai Lama has ruled out any more “concessions” to China on Tibet and threatened to resign as leader of Tibet’s banished government if hostility in his Himalayan home went “out of control.”

China: Tibet to organise suicide squads

Filed Under World News | Posted By Jennifer Sullivan | Leave a Comment

As international pressure is heaving on it to recommence dialogue with the Dalai Lama, China has asserted that Tibetan ’suicide squads’ are planning to carry out bloody attacks to interrupt Beijing Olympics. Chinese Ministry of Public Security claimed that it had information that Tibetans would arrange suicide squads in a thrust for ‘Tibetan independence’.

A ministry spokesman told reporters here that the Chinese government dreaded “violent attacks” in the run up to the Beijing Olympics starting from August 8. The Chinese Ministry said, “To our knowledge the next plan of the Tibetan independence forces is to set up suicide squads to start violent attacks.” Tibetan government however on its part has refused the charge as a “propaganda.”

Rights groups have alleged they will focus protest on the London leg on Sunday. Last week, protesters disregarded tight security to disturb the traditional torch-lighting ceremony in Ancient Olympia.

However, Beijing’s charge was quickly refused by the Tibetan government-in-exile which tagged the claims as “propaganda.” The Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama has constantly said that he is in favour of Beijing hosting the Olympics Games. The 72-year-old Nobel Peace Prize winner has denied the China’s accusation of “masterminding” the brutality in Tibet.

Reacting to the claims, Tenzing Tsundue held that China is just trying to distract the real issue by creating other issues. Dorje, the VP of the Tibetan Youth Congress – said that the claims made by China are fake.

US consider Dalai Lama as ‘a man of peace‘ and thus rejected the prospect that he may support “suicide attacks” to disturb Olympics.

“I hope not. Definitely we think it’s appropriate for Chinese officials to engage in discussion with the Dalai Lama. He is an individual who has always acted in the best interest of his nation,” US State Department Deputy Spokesman Tom Casey said.

“He’s (Lama) an individual who is a man of peace, and someone who advocates non-violence to resolve these issues. And hopefully this won’t be the final word from the Chinese government regarding him,” he said. The spokesman further said that Washington did not have “any clue that would support him (Lama) taking any kind of approach other than a peaceful, non-violent take on this issue”.

The Dalai Lama has said the Olympics were an opportunity for the world to remind China of its human rights record and further added that he supported Beijing’s hosting of the games.

“In order to be a good host to the Olympic Games, China must improve its record in the field of human rights and religious freedom,” the Tibetan leader told in an interview.

Violent protests across Tibet have clouded China’s preparation of the Olympic games .Leaders in France, Taiwan and elsewhere have murmured about a boycott of China’s first Games because of Tibet.

The Tibetan government-in-exile based in india(Dharamsala) estimated 140 deaths in the violence.
Beijing blamed for two weeks of violence on the Dalai Lama and said he was trying to sabotage the games. But the Dalai Lama has denied the charge and threatened to resign as the leader of the Tibetan government if violence went out of control.

The first leg of the Olympic Torch relay, which started this week from Greece, has already been marred by pro-Tibet protests and also India has seen huge protests.

“We will provide all possible arrangement to ensure that the Olympic Torch travels through India peacefully,” MK Narayanan, the national security adviser, told reporters on Wednesday.

India and the United States urged China and the Dalai Lama to hold peaceful negotiations between them to resolve the pro-independence unrest in Tibet.

External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee told to the reporters at a joint press conference in US that we had expressed our concern about the latest developments on Tibet and also added that we do hope it will be possible to resolve the issue through peaceful dialogue between the parties concerned.
Rice urged China to initiate dialogue with the Dalai Lama as it was the only policy that is sustainable in Tibet.

Rice also told that she had spoken with her counterpart (Yang Jiechi) about the current situation in which there needs to be restraint in which violence is not acceptable.Further added that there also needs to be a day after the current events and that really requires a sustained process of dealing with the problems of Tibet and the grievances of Tibet. We are going to continue to encourage that dialogue because ultimately that is going to be the only policy that is sustainable in Tibet and the growing international demand that Beijing should initiate talks with the 72-year-old Tibetan buddist spiritual leader.

Mukherjee is here on his maiden bilateral visit as external affairs minister.
