US leads world in drug abuse: WHO

World Health Organisation researchers said that the US leads the world in rates of experimenting with marijuana and cocaine despite strict drug laws,
The survey of 54,000 people in 17 countries found that 16% of people in the US had used cocaine in their lifetimes — far higher than the next highest rate, found in New Zealand, where 4.3% of people reported having used cocaine.
More than 42% of Americans admitted to having tried cannabis, closely followed by 41% in New Zealand, Louisa Degenhardt of the University of New South Wales in Sydney and colleagues found.

Two Indians getting award for tobacco control by WHO

Two Indians getting special award from WHO for their contribution to the control of tobacco consumption. One is doctor and other is a health activist
Both are Mumbai based and both of them have been given the Director-General’s Special Recognition Certificate. Shastri is the head of the department of preventive oncology at Mumbai Tata Memorial Hospital and another one is Ramakant is the member of National Alliance of People’s Movements (NAPM), it’s a non profit organization working against tobacco use.
Last year, Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss was the recipient of this award. Tobacco is one of the major reasons of deaths worldwide and millions of people die due to tobacco related disease like cancer, and cardiovascular problems. A report said 100 million Indians smoke unfiltered cigarettes.

WHO healthcare plan for Myanmar

The World Health Organisation(WHO) on Thursday unveiled a USD 28 million action plan to provide healthcare for cyclone survivors in Myanmar. Eric Laroche the head of WHO said, this is very serious crisis.
In Myanmar, communicable diseases are the greatest worry with the malaria season approaching, and one of another major disease risk of dengue fever and cholera. Malnutrition is also a serious threat, even people are affecting by infections, Laroche added.
After four weeks of Cyclone, more than 133,000 people dead and missing. UN report said, only 40 percent foreign aid reached.
