Yasuo Fukuda Japan’s unpopular prime minister announced his resignation.

Fukuda said he was stepping down to avoid a “political vacuum” at the head of the world’s second-largest economy.

He said, “My decision is based on what I thought the future political situation ought to be,”

The 72-year-old has suffered from chronically low support ratings as he presided over a parliament split between the ruling party and the opposition.

Quake in Northern Japan Injures

After quake, rescue team searched for injured people. The earthquake in northern Japan that left more than 100 people injured, some of them seriously.

The 6.8 Richter-scale quake struck just after midnight on the mountainous northern tip of Japan’s main island of Honshu, shattering windows and triggering landslides that blocked key roads on the Pacific coast.

According to latest report, near about 110 people were injured. Police said that 15 of them were in serious condition, some having broken bones as the quake threw them to the ground.

Bush says backs strong dollar policy

Bush said after meeting Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda, ‘‘our economy is not expanding as fast as we wish to. We had experienced the positive development in the first quarter and we will see what will happen in the second quarter.’’

The US economy rose at a 1 percent annual rate in the first quarter amid mounting oil and commodity prices. Because of consistent weakness, the Labour Department told that US employers reduced jobs for the sixth straight month in June.

The Bush administration has come under pressure from abroad to take action to balance the weak US dollar, another issue is expected to crop up during the G8 meetings at the lakeside resort of Toyako July 7-9. Continue reading…
